Triangle Green Cleaning Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Posted on October 6th, 2015 by Enovana Green Cleaning

October isn’t just a month for colorful leaves, pumpkin patches, and apple cider, it’s also a time to raise awareness about the incidence of breast cancer in the United States. We all know it’s prevalent, but consider these statistics:

  • About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
  • In 2015, an estimated 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 60,290 new non-invasive cases.
  • For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.
  • There are currently more than 2.8 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S., including women currently being treated and women who have finished treatment.
  • Men are at risk as well. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000.

Breast cancer gets special attention during October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but organizations like the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation work all year long to raise awareness about breast cancer and to find a cure through research, prevention, and education. The last decade has seen significant developments in breast cancer research—genetic links, diet and lifestyle links, improved chemotherapy drugs and preventive drugs, and increased prevention through mammography.

But as we continue to strive for a cure, many of us know someone who has battled this disease—or have done so personally—and we understand how important it is to provide a support system for people going through treatment. Chemotherapy takes a tremendous toll on the patient and there’s often little energy to do anything else. That’s why organizations like Cleaning for a Reason exist.

“Health has always been our number one guiding force at Triangle Green Cleaning,” said owner Joe McCutcheon. “That’s why we use cleaning products that are safe for people and for our environment. Because we want to keep people healthy.” A few years back, McCutcheon looked for ways to expand his mission of health and discovered Cleaning for a Reason. Since 2009, Triangle Green Cleaning has partnered with Cleaning for a Reason to provide free house cleaning services to women undergoing cancer treatment.

“We’ve been working with this great organization for almost seven years, serving nearly 50 patients along the way,” said McCutcheon. “Many of my employees have told me how special it is to go into these homes, where people are dealing with the pain of the disease and the effects of toxic treatments. Many times, they have told me what an honor it is to go in and give these people one more reason to rest and heal properly while they take care of the work. And in many cases, it’s women helping other women, which adds to the special bond that our employees have with their customers.”

October is a great month for participating in a fundraising event, like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Charlotte, but you can help raise awareness all year long.
